Ten Ways Leadership Can Motivate Team Building and Performance

Managers, supervisors, and team leaders need to understand how communication and recognition can help motivate team members to have better attitudes and become more productive. Many ways exist to motivate team members to build a better team and increase the team and individual performance.

Presented for consideration are ten possible ways for managers, supervisors, and leaders to motivate their team with little budget and resources that may not require higher-level management approval. Most ideas can be implemented merely by a change in team accountability or the way the manager or leader communicates with the team and encourages the team to grow itself.

Be positive and set a good example for the team. Share information on projects and business openly with the team. When possible, let team work through their conflicts, but be ready to resolve negative conflict and bad situations before team morale is damaged. Give feedback for improvement when necessary in a positive and thoughtful way. Show appreciation for the work team does using different methods for rewarding team and members. If a team request or member idea is not understood, ask for clarification or examples. Actively listen to team complaints, ideas, and improvements. Allow the team to evaluate its leader and suggest improvement ideas to help the team with respect, trust, and confidence in their leader. Show confidence in the team by supporting their work and needs. Do periodic team assessments with the members on how the team is doing as a way to increase awareness of what is right and identify opportunities for improvement.

Selecting from these ten ways to motivate teams, the team leader, supervisor, or manager can implement a strategy for building the team and improving individual performance as well. All it may take is changing the way the manager, supervisor, or leader communicates with and encourages the team's potential growth, as well as the team members accepting responsibility for their progress. The result should be improved team member attitudes, better team behaviors, and increasing work productivity.

Choosing the Right Team Building Program - The 3 C's

A client called me yesterday to inform me that she was putting the selection of this year's team building activities up for a company-wide vote. Her entire staff had been offered a choice: a day of solving one of our Dr. Clue treasure hunts OR a day of team cooking lessons (with another outfit).

I found this to be an unusual and rather refreshing practice ... giving everyone the power to decide their own team building exercises. In my experience, most organizations delegate the responsibility for choosing their corporate team building activities to a small "selection committee", often one or two people from management. This committee then pronounces that their off-site is XYZ...and participation is mandatory.

Team Building Training

You can imagine how people respond to the latter approach: grumbling, a sense of coercion, skepticism, and resistance. Inevitably, these are the events in which people ask, "So, what are the prizes?" In other words, "I didn't choose to be here, so what's in it for me?"

This goes back to Alfie Kohn's book "Punished by Rewards", in which he posits that intrinsic (or self-generated) motivation arises when you have Three C's in place:

1) Collaboration
2) Content
3) Choice

In other words, people tend to buy into a project when they can work together with others (collaboration), contribute to a meaningful cause (content), and proceed according to their own self-direction (choice). Without the Three C's in place, you have to motivate people "extrinsically" (or externally). That means offering everyone incentives, prizes, compensation, etc. According to Kohn, intrinsic motivation is far stronger and more long-lasting than extrinsic motivation. Moreover, external "reward giving" can be a slippery slope; you need to continually up the ante, increasing the quality and value of the "prizes" to keep people motivated.

Getting back to my potential client...I certainly hope they choose my company, Dr. Clue (naturally)! But even if they don't, I'll bet that the participants bring a high degree of enthusiasm and buy-in to whatever activity they select. After all, they'll have chosen the content themselves. It's their activity! And that makes all the difference.

Team Building - Seven Ways to Make It Happen in Your Workplace

You have the potential to eliminate the distractions and obstacles that arise because your employees don't work well together. Team building doesn't take a large amount of resources and it offers great rewards in the form of fewer headaches, higher productivity and motivated staff members. There are many organizations that have discovered that team building is a tool that can help them improve the functioning of their organization. The following ideas will help you design a strategy that works for you.
Develop a team building plan. Decide beforehand at what time and how frequently your team building activities will take place, who will facilitate and who will attend. Welcome everyone. Nothing detracts from a sense of team cohesiveness like leaving someone out because they are labeled "difficult." This process is universally inclusive because everyone gets to participate. I highly encourage agencies to consistently include top management, staff and especially people who are having challenges working with others. Regular attendance is important. Nobody gets to avoid these meetings. Think of the message it sends the rest of the staff when one person or a leader is not present. Over time you'll find that people actually enjoy the process. Schedule for success. Schedule meetings during calmer times when people can dedicate their time and brains to thinking and participating. I recommend holding one-hour meetings weekly on a predictable, regular and ongoing schedule so that people get in the habit of practicing team building. Establish a calm, civil, caring and professional atmosphere. All comments and opinions are welcome, everyone gets equal time to talk and share ideas, no rebuttals, no personal attacks, leave personal agendas at the door and everyone agrees to listen to one another. It helps to have a neutral facilitator set the ground rules and facilitate the meetings, someone who is familiar with how to run effective meetings. Make your meetings exclusively about team building. We aren't here to fix problems, get into arguments or do strategic planning. These interruptions take away from the learning process. Remember that you're doing this because you're trying to build stronger teams. Keep practicing. Continue holding the meetings over time and you will get good at it. Commit to meeting regularly and team building will become a normal part of your operations.

These seven ideas will increase the morale and cohesiveness at your organization because you will be consciously working on changing behaviors in your workplace. A small investment in time and energy up front pays off big in the end because the pitfalls associated with people not working together gradually fade away. At first this process may seem strange or different but give it time. I takes commitment and practice to make changes in the workplace and building effective teams is no exception. The payoff will come when you eliminate the noise that gets in the way of highly functional teams. Now it's your turn to make it happen.

Team Building Activities - Unifying Your Workforce

Team building activities have the sole purpose to create a unity within a group of workers by unifying them and strengthening relationships which will consequently lead to a better overall productivity.

Imagine a football team where the left back runs up and down the wing whenever he feels like, without even caring if the right back is covering for him or the midfielders don't know what the strikers best foot is. I don't see a team like this going too far, that is exactly what happens to businesses that don't invest in unifying corporate activities.

Team Building Training

The Team is the building block of every successful business. A good solid team should be the motivation behind the success of any company.

By incorporating activities that help bring your employees together, you are not only alleviating stress from the daily work environment, but you will also have the opportunity to observe the dynamics of your group as well as any hidden skills that some of your employees might have.

For instance, the person that is always quiet and unassuming, during a team building game this person could reveal an extraordinary organisation skill as he or she create a plan to help the team win the game. This hidden skill can then be used within your organisation in every day work.

Going back to the football team analogy, team building activities are ideal to connect people from different departments creating key relationships within your enterprise and infusing new life into dormant departments. Remember the left and right backs?

Successful team building also helps to raise the morale of your workforce and the byproduct of that you will notice on your productivity levels. When employees feel good about themselves and their work environment, they not only work better but they also take pride in their daily tasks with many going the extra mile to produce something they are proud of.

Implementing a team building schedule into your calendar will require an investment of time and money but the benefits of connecting different personalities and background within your team are far greater than all the investment needed.

Nowadays in UK there are hundreds of companies specialised in creating team building activities tailored to any business, be it small or large corporations.

7 Simple Team Building Exercises

Team building is not only important in business. It is also good for sporting teams, children and pretty much anywhere else you require people to work together as a team. It can also be therapeutic for people who have a social anxiety or find it hard to connect with others. Following are a few basic team building exercises.

#1 - Pipe line.

Team Building Training

This is a simple one to start off with. Each person gets a piece of pipe. They must use the pipe to transfer a marble or small ball around from person to person. The ball mustn't touch the ground and the players must not use their hands. If they accomplish this easily at first then tell them to do it again within a specific time frame.

#2 - Egg Transporter.

Each participant has a spoon. Similar to pipe line except you are using an egg and a spoon instead of a marble and a piece of pipe. This can be played a race with teams competing to see who gets the egg back to the first person. The objective is to pass the egg from person to person using just the spoon.

#3 - Mine field.

Get people to split up into pairs. One person wears a blindfold while the other person is the guide. The guide must guide the person wearing the blind fold to a goal. Set up a few obstacles between where they start and the goal. The obstacles are easily depicted with witches hats or marker cones. To add a competitive aspect (for fun) time each pair and add a few seconds to their time if they hit an obstacle.

#4 - Three leg race.

This is another activity that requires people to work in pairs. The pair stands next to each other and tie their middle legs together to give them three legs. Then the pair's race! This promotes coordination with their partner because their middle leg (which are essentially two legs tied together) must work in unison in order to pick up speed.

#5 - Four team tug-of-war.

Using four teams instead of two and a rope that has spreads out to have four ends instead of just two. It is much more strategy dependent and a great way to make team building work fun.

#6 - Zoom.

A pretty fun game that is reliant on the team's imagination as a whole. The group is given a set of pictures (may or may not be sequential) that they then have to build a story around. There is more than one version of this game. The version I describe here is probably my favourite because it is great for people who work in a creative industry.

#7 - Great Egg Drop.

Eggs make for the best team building tool it seems. The idea is to create something as a team out of various objects to protect the egg from breaking if dropped. Part of successful team building is centred on people working together. The other aspect revolves around people finding how they can best benefit a group as an individual.

Top 5 Reasons Why Team Building Games Fail, and How to Avoid Them

When a Californian home security company chose their team building games, little did they know that the program would end disastrously, not just for the employees but for the company as well.

In the fiercely competitive game, sales teams were pitted against each other. Throughout the game, the competitors' name posts were fixed in strategic places to make the employees 'fight the crap out of each other'. In the end, the winning team ridiculed the losing team by making them wear diapers, feeding them baby food and throwing pies at them.

Team Building Training

After the event, employees sued the company and it had to pay out USD1.7 million as damages! So much for honorable intentions!

A huge number of team building games fails because they share at least a few - if not all - of the elements above. They think that the best team games are those that pit teams against each other through fierce contests and throw up clear winners and losers. This is ironic because most companies desire more cooperation between employees, not fierce competitiveness. They want an atmosphere where knowledge is shared and success is achieved together. Then, where is the sense in selecting team building games where the focus is on competition rather than cooperation?

Some of the main reasons why team building games fail are as follows:
No understanding of final goals and objectives: Many employers like to spring a surprise on their employees but this can be counterproductive. When participants do not know the end goals, there could be seriously hostility between them. Instead, companies should inform the team members of the teambuilding program. In fact, companies can go one step further and give team members the power to choose. By respecting the team's views and decisions in the matter and by giving them what they want, companies take the first step towards effective team building.
Trying to scare employees into being a team: Facilitators sometimes push a huge challenge on the employees as the very first activity. Quite naturally, this makes more than 90% of the participants hold back from giving their best. Facilitators must design games so that there is proper sequencing of activities starting with games that address the group's current state of being. Do the team members know each other well? Is there a conflict that must be resolved before the team can work as one? The level of complexity must go up slowly to ensure that everyone is able to contribute evenly.
Stiff competition = rivalry: Competition is not the basis for team work, cooperation is. According to studies, more than 87% of times, greater advantage goes to teams that took the cooperative approach instead of the competitive one. The reasons are not hard to find. When you try to make one team (or team member) win, everyone loses. If people get a feeling that they weren't good enough, it lowers their performance. Often, competition uncovers the inner jerk in the participants and some people may even try unfair means just so they can win. Besides, people learn much less when they are fighting against each other. Therefore, team building games must focus on imparting lessons instead of finding and rewarding winners.
Lack of commitment: Sometimes, management makes the mistake of considering the program an exercise in futility, something that is done to keep the employees in good humor. This feeling gets conveyed to teams automatically and results are unsatisfactory. In memory of Alejandro Maclean ( 1969-2010 )

In memory of Alejandro Maclean ( 1969-2010 ) Tube. Duration : 3.85 Mins.

CASSARUBIOS, Spain -- It is with great sadness that we share the loss of Red Bull Air Race pilot Alejandro (Alex) Maclean, who has died today at the age of 41 following a fatal accident in his native Spain while carrying out aerobatic training for an Air Show. Our thoughts are with his wife Emma and their two children aged 7 and 12. The entire Red Bull Air Race community and the aerobatic fraternity have lost one of their most vibrant and passionate characters. Alex's significant contribution to the growth and development of the Red Bull Air Race over the past six years and to aviation in general will be remembered forever by those who shared this journey with him. The former captain of the Spanish national aerobatic team began his Red Bull Air Race career in 2003 and was a key figure in the evolution of the championship. A fiercely competitive streak led the Spaniard to accelerate the development of the MXS-R with fellow pilot Nigel Lamb and Alex kept his longstanding technician busy with an aggressive modification schedule. Known at the Race Airport for his expressive Latino temperament, Alex was a deeply sensitive and emotionally charged character who fought against obvious frustration when results weren't forthcoming. Despite this, he continued to push forward with his loyal team and finished the 2010 season on a philosophical note, taking personal responsibility for a disappointing result. While he worked his race team hard and expected absolute commitment, Alex ...

Team Work - Advantages and Disadvantages

A a team work has assigned almost only advantages. We can see them and name them. Meanwhile, work in a team also has small disadvantages, usually hard to see them in our everyday work. Why it's worth to work in a team and why sometimes not?

When we are talking about team work we mean that a team leader formulates tasks and team realizes it together but using the strengths of individual members. This form allows you to avoid job losses, as the activities are subject to internal audit and evaluation at each stage, and organizational activities are rationalized up.

Team Building Training

Also when a group of intelligent people is talking about one common subject and looking for best solution they usually find the answer to their questions. Why? Because we are all different and while speaking one mind is stimulating another one and that's how the best ideas and solution usually comes up during brainstorming.

And as we speaking of brainstorm and conversation it is very important to know how to speak with the colleagues and communicate every doubts and needs about work. Also listen actively, share suggestions and don't hide bad feelings. Letting bad feelings brew can sometimes isolate one person from the group. And that in a longer term can make this person feel not loyal to all the group. And loyalty is what in team work is most important - it makes the team feel secure with each other.

When working in a team there are no losers and no winners. That, despite of obvious advantage (no one loses anything), can be a big disadvantage - no one takes a blame and no one can feel really good of gained success. If no one is responsible for each task sometimes no one knows who is doing what and the job might not be done at all.

If we have situation that the group of people consists mostly of leaders their team work might just not simply...work. What's worse, a few people in the group who are not the leader types can be pushed aside by they colleagues and have a problem to do their jobs. Leaders would be concentrated on achieving the goal and won't care about helping other team members and socialazing with them and won't become a good team.

It is worth to work in a team having in mind those few disadvantages. Most of them can came up when the team is not very well and people don't like each other. Also sometimes when people don't know how to work in a team. That's why it is worth to try a team development course and practise social skills.

Exciting Team Building Games

Encouraging your employees to work together can be fun if you choose the right team building games. Fortunately, there are a ton of activities that can be incorporated it into team building games, and your group may be having such a great time they may hardly notice that they are learning how to work together better. In case you need a few fun game ideas here are some of the most popular activities:

Trivia

Team Building Training

Everyone loves a good trivia game, and properly executed team building games using trivia can help team members learned to think quickly, as well as helping them recognize that each individual team member brings valuable strings to the team, and helps them to reach their goals. Trivia games with the use of buzzers, music, and MCs are much more exciting.

Game Show

Part trivia and part challenge, game show team building games have something for everyone. Teams have to work together in order to successfully complete tasks or answer questions, and every team member has to contribute.

Scavenger Hunt

Nothing livens up a team like a good scavenger hunt, and it is a great way to get your group out of the office on a Friday afternoon, or to break up a conference session. Teams decide how they are going to strategize their hunt, and have to work quickly and cohesively to get the job done.

Sandcastle Contest

Enjoy the sand in the sun while your team comes up with a great sandcastle design. This challenging task involves deciding on what type of sand castle to build, and then completing the design within an allotted time frame. Teams not only have to work together, they also have to balance the challenge of building a great sand castle, versus their sand castle building skill level.

Sports Day

Instead of bottling up your employees on a slow Friday afternoon, let them out for some team building games. Just like back in primary school, sports day is a mixture of fun and challenge. The tasks ensure that every team member gets to show off their skills, and of course there are prizes for everyone.

Besides encouraging your team to work together, these games can also help incorporate new employees into the group, as they are a terrific icebreaker. Consider putting together an event together for your group, or talk to a professional team building trainer for more ideas.

It is a sound investment offering training seminars to all who participate in teams on the job, in order to improve your company's effectiveness and increase your bottom line. One strategy that all good team leaders and members know is communication skills that are effective. Communication Skills training is available to your team so that you can move forward with your team goals. Team Building Training

Being a team leader will mean that you will want to deal with team members that are not giving it their all, or have poor attitudes. You will also need to mentor team members so they can stretch and succeed in the team setting. Management training is available both online and in-house that can help improve these all-important skills. Project Manager Considerations When Building a Project Team

As a Project Manager, your team may already have already been assigned before you build a project plan. If this is so, it will allow better estimations of resource budget and the team can participate in designing the project schedule. Alternatively, the team may not be approved and build until the implementation phase begins, which means a preliminary plan has been developed. Remember that if the team can help with planning, then they are more likely to be committed to accomplishing the plan and the project goal or objective. In addition, it is less likely that omission of important details from the plan will occur if the team is involved in developing the plan. Where possible, before trying to develop a project plan, assemble a Project Team of people that have something to contribute to the overall project.

These project team members may have expertise in similar projects or be someone with a stake in the outcome of the project. More experienced people will help insure the project stays on schedule, however working on a project with a mentor or others more experienced can be a great learning experience for those new to this type of work, process, service, or product. Team members may be volunteers or given the assignment to participate on the project. Typically, volunteers make more of an effort and require less supervision than those assigned without asking if they would like to participate. As the Project Manager, you should talk with each perspective member to make sure they understand what their project responsibilities and accountability might be, what challenges they may look forward to, and what value they offer to the team. Additionally, you should note how much freedom each member would have in carrying out their tasks and making decisions related to their assignments.

Team Building Training

If the project team members have worked together before, then the project may start well. Team members who have worked on team projects before will already be familiar with team problem solving and participatory decision-making and will see working on the team as a motivating factor in their and others' contribution to the project. However, if some of the team members have not worked together or been part of a team before, you as the project manager need to consider if there is need for any team training or other team-building activities to help the members work better as a team. If the team has not worked together before, in their first team meeting, you and your team members will need to establish conduct guidelines for personal and group behavior. You may want to establish what types of information sharing may or may not go outside the project team as well. Working as a team and with your feedback, the project members should find they produce better project results in a more effective manner.

If any team members are only a part-time assignment to the project, then you need to determine with them how they will prioritize their work. As a rule of thumb, no one should be working on more than three projects at a time. As your project continues, be sure to give team members feedback on their individual performance. If they need to change the way they are doing something, be sure to explain why they need to make the change as well s what and how to change. Be sure to let team members know that their contribution is valuable to project and team success. If a team member is not willing to work toward the project goal, then they need to be convinced or removed from the project team. Reward both team behavior and individual accomplishments in order to insure team members work together and value each other's contributions.

Team Building Exercise

Unfortunately, many employees tend the idea of team-building exercise to denigrate. You've probably seen it happen when the manager announces a weekend or an evening, where employees together as a group.

Inevitably, someone will begin to participate in the group complaining about the uselessness and the problem with this type of exercise. In this article we look at ways to ensure that the team-building exercise works for you.

Team Building Training

OldHat

The first thing that you and your employees need to realize that, despite the fact that they have a lot of attention in the last decade or so has won, the group's construction activities are really nothing new.

You've been a long time, they just got ridiculous in size in the world of work today. For example, Christmas parties and other social events for members of all forms of workplace team building, just not advertised as such byManagement.

Why team building?

The reason that the agencies and companies tend to hold different types of team building exercises, because frankly, they work.

They may seem silly or even counterproductive to employees at the time, but when everyone starts to get involved can actually really like and really gives the opportunity to create greater cohesion with the other workers.

Key to success

The key to building successful teamsExercise is to show for the group as a whole too little enthusiasm for the event.

There are many reasons for people to be excited by a team-building exercise, but the truth is, that stand in the way of success, is actually getting in trouble with management. Team building exercises help to distinguish not only the good workers, they can also help potential trouble spots in their team managers.

Stronger when the complainer is definitely a good way to getfingers during a team-building exercise (unless, of course, you can get better with a journey in search of work, but be very careful here, do not want to think like a manager, you have stolen or her to show! ).

Could it be that the team-building exercise is held by the company to complain about anything really. Great indeed, may be an activity that everyone really enjoys, and leaves without any effort. But even if this is not the case in your practice, in realityit does not hurt to go ahead and try to exploit the situation.

Choosing the Right Team Building Exercises

Choosing the right team building activities for your team is essential to their productivity. It is simply not enough to call a group of people a team and leave it at that. The teams are evolving growing and changing as a whole and individuals within them. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to keep your team works as smoothly as possible. The exercises are a valuable opportunity to promote the atmosphere in the team and develop team skills. Some companies do not decideUse activities or exercises, something that certainly seems to work against them.

If you know what you get on your team, team building exercises, the choice is much simpler request. If you do not know, you have to take some time to think and plot out. If you do not know what you expect from your group will not know what they work for. To find the desired result will help you to exercise your calls directly to them. Browsing for the team-building tips and ideas can helpHave begun. There are also professionals in providing the resources necessary to get specialized feeds the fire of your team.

Team Building Training

Do not use the exercises that are general in nature and are considered very good for any team. Your team building activities should be directly paid to your team. This means that you know what is expected of them and exercise angles, so that gives them the opportunity to explore together how they might achieve, the need to. Mostspecific that you are able to be, the more successful your team will then be as well.

Always choose team building exercises by taking into account the personalities and skills of each of your individual team members. Everyone has something different to offer. Use exercises to focus on strengths and weaknesses in a specific way so that each team member is truly benefiting from the exercise. If you do not encourage the growth of your team members through these exercises, they will be pointless and a waste of time, which is the last thing that you want.

Every exercise should have a purpose that is obvious to everyone involved. If it isn't clear what the point is then perhaps that activity just isn't the right one. Team building is about becoming bigger and stronger as a functioning unit. If that is not happening then you need to re-evaluate the exercises that you are choosing. 1998 J24 Worlds - Thank You Crew Video Video Clips. Duration : 6.27 Mins.

I had the pleasure of sailing with Will Crump in the 1998 J24 Worlds. He gathered a fun crew to compete in his first World's and thanked us with this video. During the practice race, we had a video camera mounted to help us work on the crew work required in the heavy air of San Francisco. Real race footage was captured by his dad during the regatta. This is set to slightly explicit music... apologies to the faint of heart.

Leadership - Getting the Very Best From Your Employees by Team Building

Team building is a word you hear everywhere. Lots of people talk about team building, but quite often leaders forget the benefits from fully implementing all aspects of team building.

Get Your Employees fully involved Get employees to take on responsibility Give praise where praise is due Don't be scared to pass on responsibility

Team Building Training

Let's examine all these interesting aspects of team building to gain full benefits from implementing these goals.

Get Your Employees Fully Involved

In order to start building teams, leaders will have to learn a very important lesson: employees like to be heard. Whether you are planning new projects, downsizing in some areas or considering upgrading some of your employees, you will find that getting your employees involved will make them far more positive towards change.

Employees live off your business. They understand why change is necessary, but for change to be positive you must involve them as early as possible.

The problem with the old way of thinking was that many leaders only felt their employees were an expense. In some countries outsourcing to India has become an alternative. Although many companies have found other problems connected with that, these problems were often not discussed because many in leadership positions were afraid to lose face as a result of having been in error when they outsourced. They need not fear that in an environment where employees feel mutual respect from leadership.

Employees are far better qualified than they were just ten or fifteen years ago, and leaders should realize that, and gain the full benefits from putting that into consideration when doing their planning.

Get Employees to Take On Responsibility

When management has questions they need cleared up taking on a representative from among your employees can get them involved in answering these questions. You don't need expensive consultants if you start implementing the ideals of a Learning Organization.

In fact, you can get good rotating focus groups when you have all levels of employees in these little groups.

Best of all is you get good answers, and often you only have to give a nice lunch for people to feel it was good to offer their opinions and ideas. Many companies have gotten far better results from such focus groups with both a social perspective of binding people more closely together, but also because employees spoke more positively about their leaders after such meetings.

Give Praise Where Praise Is Due

Giving praise where praise is due is one of the cheapest things your business can do. Whether it's just a nice card, a box of chocolates or a nice bottle of wine as a token of appreciation for a job well done, these are good signals to employees that you see their involvement.

Management often talks of Return on Investment, but they should think more in Return on Involvement.

Don't Be Scared to Pass on Responsibility

When you see employees with special talents, you should get moving in getting that person to love taking responsibility. You will find that people that are involved - and growing - in your business will be more likely to stay with your business.

If you don't get such people involved they might move on to other businesses, and you end up with new expenses for recruitment - and you might not get the same quality next time you hire. This is absolutely worth remembering.

In Conclusion

So, all in all, you should get your team involved across levels in your business. If you learn to do this, you can gets lots of valuable information for your company.
